Mono Lake
We drove to the north side of the lake, arbitrarily following unmarked dirt roads towards the water. We camped on the edge of a black dune and watched the stars struggle out as the moon hung huge over the lake. A magnificent, desolate place. The bats were out, and gulls splashed in a small pond carrying out some moonlit ritual. Bathing, or maybe feeding.
We pitied our peers, paid more but trapped behind desks. We had the essentials in our cars, in our heads, our hearts, and that empty landscape was intoxicating. This is freedom, we decided.
A meteor shower.
Later, lightning beyond the mountains to the east. Intimations of distant danger. The next day fires burning in the wilderness.

The outdoors
they should've had a treehouse
a secret hideout
they should've gone exploring
maybe that old abandoned house two blocks over or
better yet
stumbled upon a hidden cave
nothing sepulchral, nor too deep
just small enough to get lost in, but find your way out easily
two explorers etching their names inside a heart on stone walls
farther down
deeper in
pinholes of sunlight from above
guiding their way
ooh look beds of amethyst and peridot, she cries
glimmering lavender and green
depper now, he leads the way solicitously
cerulean plates of lapis and topaz show themselves
behind a pale wall of water (it is an enchanted cave, after all)
they play there
trading kisses and making merry and no one can stop them
the sunlight overhead changes, finally
more somber and gold than clear white
they make their exit
no one can see their hiding place because of the low, deciduous trees over its face
they will come again
to their playground in the earth.
